What is Massage Therapy?

Massage may be the oldest and simplest form of health care dating back to ancient civilazations and it is a therapy that continues to thrive today. Put simply, Massage is the manipulation of the layers of muscle and connective tissue in the body to enhance function and to aid the body in healing itself, increasing your health, vitality and well being in the process. There are many different types of massage but they all have the same basic intention, to heal the body and soothe the mind.

A therapeutic massage is a great way for you to relax, but do not expect it to take the place of good nutrition, proper rest, and regular physical exercise.

How does massage therapy work?

When you receive a massage, your body is able to unlock and have access to the same repairing and regenerative systems it accesses while you are asleep. Normally the body can only access these natural healing and repairing functions whilst you are in the deepest state of sleep (which many people cannot achieve or do not have time for in today's society). By receiving regular massage therapy, you are programming your body to access these healing functions, the end result being an optimization of your health and well being on a daily basis.

How often should I have a massage?

Receiving massage therapy at least once a month results in numerous health benefits for clients, but an even greater frequency will be even more effective. Having massage on a regular basis will help to promote a healthy circulatory system, along with good posture, and tension and pain release in the muscles, allowing them to move more freely. People who receive massage therapy frequently tend to be more flexible and comfortable in their bodies, since they are maintaining a higher level of general health. Receiving a massage can also be good for specific conditions, such as stress, and it may even be recommended by a doctor.

Be aware that receiving massage has cumulative benefits, so you may not instantly feel better after one or two treatments, but you will start to notice a difference after four or more regular treatments..

Ultimately, the decision of how often you receive massage is based on input from your body. Listen to your body, treat it with the respect and care it deserves as it works very hard for you every day ensuring that you are able to function at your mental and physical best.

Why do I need to give my full medical history to my massage therapist?

There are several medical conditions that would make massage inappropriate. That's why it is necessary that you fill out the health history forms and before you begin your massage session. The massage therapist will ask general health questions to rule out if you have any contraindications to massage. It is very important that you inform your massage therapist of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to any session. Your massage therapist may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor before commencing treatment.

Please take care of yourself by eating and drinking fluids appropriately during the day.
